Manitoba’s police watchdog The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is looking into a case involving an RCMP officer, a speeder and a pylon.
According to the IIU, a member of the RCMP in Eastern Manitoba stopped a speeding vehicle on Highway 17 in the RM of Rockwood on October 21, 2018.
The 27-year-old driver of the vehicle was found to not have a valid drivers licence and was arrested and placed in the back seat of a police cruiser. The officer said that the suspect then blew mucus and spit all over the seat. At this point, the officer grabbed a pylon that was in the vehicle and hit the man with it.
After the incident, the IIU say the officer reported it to his supervisor.
IIU civilian director, Zane Tessler, has determined that even though the man who was hit by the pylon was not injured it is in the public interest for the IIU to investigate.
