Cop charged for carless storage of a firearm after leaving service pistol in hotel room

An investigation into an RCMP officer has resulted in charges.

The independent Investigation Unit (IIU) of Manitoba has concluded its investigation into an allegation of unsafe storage of a firearm by an on-duty RCMP officer.

According to reports the officer improperly stored his service pistol on August 15, 2017 and that he left the unsecured weapon in a northern Manitoba hotel following checkout.

After a lengthy investigation Zane Tessler, the civilian director of the IIU has determined that there are reasonable and probable grounds to believe a criminal offence occurred.

On December 15, Constable Geremy Newbury was informed of the charge of careless storage of a firearm and was served with a summons to appear at Provincial Court in Flin Flon on February 1, 2018.
