Postmedia closes 6 newspapers, stops print editions of 3 more

More cuts to the newspaper industry as Postmedia announced Tuesday, June 26, 2018, that six local papers will be cut and three more will cease printing but maintain an online version.

In Manitoba, the Portage Daily Graphic in Portage la Prairie will stop printing a paper edition and will focus on delivering local content online. The Pembroke Observer and Northern News in Kirkland Lake in Ontario will also be converted to online-only publications.

Two papers in Alberta, the Camrose Canadian and the Strathmore Standard and four papers in Ontario the Kapuskasing Northern Times, the Ingersoll Times, the Norwich Gazette and the Petrolia Topic will all be closed.

Postmedia cited the reason for the closures was due to the loss of advertising revenue in print editions and an overall need to reduce their wage costs by 10% by August 31, 2018.

In November of 2017, the Metro Winnipeg was shut down, along with 22 other community newspapers across the country when Postmedia and Torstar swapped assets.

That deal between the two major publishers is now the subject of a probe by the Competition Bureau.
