Serious incident has police converge on Colony Street building

UPDATED

Dozens of police officers converged on an apartment building on Colony Street just after 3:30 pm on Monday, January 28, 2019, in what Winnipeg Police said was a serious incident.

Police say that a 26-year-old female called them saying that she had been assaulted by a male to the point of unconsciousness. She said that she left the apartment with her child as soon as she came to. The woman also told police that the male in the suite may have weapons and a second female was being held in the suite. Paramedics treated the woman at the scene for minor injuries.

When police investigated and tried to make contact with the male he confirmed he had a weapon and that there was another female in the residence.

Officers secured the area as the incident was now considered an armed and barricaded situation.

Members of the Tactical Support Unit along with ARV-1, the Winnipeg Police armoured vehicle were on hand for several hours before entering the suite just after 12:30 am Tuesday morning, January 29, 2019.

The suspect was arrested and safely removed from the suite. A 28-year-old female, who had been held against her will, was also safely removed. She did not suffer any physical injuries during the incident say police.

Some of the residents in the building were escorted out early in the incident for their own safety according to reports but no one else was being allowed to enter or exit the building or the two buildings on either side.
