Collision on Trans-Canada Highway Claims 15 Lives, Injures 10 Others

RCMP Major Crime Services is investigating a mass casualty collision that claimed the lives of 15 people and injured 10 others at the intersection of Highway 1 and Highway 5 on Thursday, Jun 15, 2023.

Police were called to the scene around 11:40 am and found a semi-truck with major front-end damage and a bus on fire in a nearby ditch. Officers knew immediately that it was a mass casualty situation and RCMP from across western Manitoba were called to the scene.

Police say that the bus containing several seniors from Dauphin was travelling southbound on Highway 5 and was crossing the eastbound lanes of Highway 1 when it was hit by the semi. The bus was en route from Dauphin to Sand Hills Casino in the Carberry area

In a release to media RCMP said “At this time we can confirm there were 15 fatalities, and 10 people taken to hospital with various injuries.”

Stars Air Ambulance deployed two helecopters to the scene, one from Winnipeg, the other from Regina.

A family support centre has been set up in Dauphin and RCMP officers are on hand to answer questions that families may have.

The investigation continues.
