The union representing workers at the Extra Foods on Regent Ave in Winnipeg say that store will be closing in September. That will leave the store on St. Anne’s Rd as the sole Extra Foods outlet in the city.
Employees have been told that they will be offered jobs at other Loblaw owned stores.
Loblaw said in a statement in July of 2015 that it would be closing 52 of its least profitable stores over the next year.
Loblaw owns Real Canadian Superstore, No Frills, Extra Foods and Shoppers Drug Mart in Manitoba and a number of other brands across the country including Joe Fresh & President’s Choice.
The closing of an Extra Foods location is not new in Winnipeg. In 2012 the company closed its 600 Notre Dame Ave store and two months later announced the closing of its 1445 Main Street location.
Both locations turned into NO Frills stores which are operated by franchisees.
