City says October storm adds to year-end deficit, now standing at $9.4 million

Winnipeg’s deficit in the operating budget now stands at $9.4 million and more than half of that is directly related to the major storm in October.

The city says that cleanup this year will cost about $5 million and as much as $7.9 million when it is completed in 2020.

“The city of Winnipeg experienced significant storm conditions in October that left extensive damage and requires months of cleanup and recovery work,” said Councillor Scott Gillingham, Chair of the Standing Policy Committee on Finance.

The city says that it is likely they will be forced to dip into the Financial Stabilization Reserve Fund. It is a fund that was set up for these types of scenarios.

The city also says that will apply for any disaster assistance funding that may be offered by the province but so far none has been announced.
