The City of Winnipeg has issued an immediate evacuation order for the property at 2440 Portage Ave. due to severe structural deterioration. The order, issued under the Winnipeg Building By-law and the Emergency Management By-law, came after a third-party engineering inspection revealed significant structural issues in various parts of the building.
The property owner has been contacted by the City and has been instructed to immediately vacate the property, prohibit entry until it is deemed safe, and ensure continuous 24/7 monitoring of the property’s structural stability. Further orders addressing the specific actions necessary to rectify the unsafe conditions are expected to be issued to the property owner.
City officials are going door-to-door to inform tenants of the order and ensure the building is vacated. A reception centre is being established by the City to assist residents who do not have alternative accommodation options and to connect them with available resources and supports.
While the timeline for repairs, inspections, and re-occupancy is currently unknown, it is anticipated that it may take several months to address the identified structural issues. Tenants are advised to contact the property owner or building manager for more information.
In addition, City officials are advising residents in neighbouring properties along Assiniboine Avenue to prepare for possible evacuation, as they are now on evacuation watch due to the structural condition of the apartment building. The City of Winnipeg is taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety of its residents.
