Manitoba Families says that a privacy breach by the Children’s Disability Services (CDS) was accidental.
On Wednesday, August 26, 2020 CDS staff inadvertently sent an email intended for the Manitoba Advocate for Children and Youth (MACY) to approximately 100 agencies and advocacy groups. The email contained a spreadsheet with personal information about 9,000 children who are client of CDS including their addresses and diagnosis.
The province said that although the spreadsheet was password protected the password was also provided.
The privacy breach is being blamed on human error. Manitoba families said in a statement that they will be following up with staff to review and improve processes to avoid this happening again.
The province intends to contact all affected families to advise them of the breach and apologize for the error.
MACY and the Manitoba Ombudsman have been informed of the breach.
