Child dies in northern Manitoba river

RCMP say there is no foul play suspected in the death of a 4-year-old boy in the community of Shmattawa on June 12, 2018.

The boy and friends had been swimming in the Gods River when he began struggling and sank below the water. Within minutes police and community members began looking for the child. Searchers took to the water and searched the shores for any sign of the boy. Members of the community also used nets across the river so that the child wouldn’t be swept away with the current.

The search continued on June 13, 2018, and a helicopter from Sustainable Development was brought in to assist searchers.

RCMP deployed their Underwater Recovery Team on June 14, 2018, while community members checked the nets that had strung up and found the child’s body.
