As News4 reported last week – On October 18, 2016 emergency crews responded to a child in medical distress on Aikins Street in Winnipeg’s north end. A 9 month old male was taken to hospital in critical condition.
While police were there they became aware of a safety issue in the home over possible fentanyl residue and called in the Clandestine Lab Team to deal with the situation.
Officers immediately notified medical staff at which time the child was treated appropriately, resulting in an immediate improvement in the child’s condition. Soon after, the child’s condition improved and was listed in stable condition.
The Child Abuse Unit entered into an investigation and executed a search warrant at the residence.
While in the home officers discovered up to a 1/2 ounce of loose suspected fentanyl powder, 10 ounces of bagged suspected fentanyl powder, Cutting agent, Contaminated bowl and spoon. Testing is still being conducted into what the substance is.
On October 24, 2016 police arrested the parents of the child, a 33 year old man and a 32 year old woman and have charged them for their alleged involvement with the following:
- Failure to Provide the Necessities of Life
- Cause Bodily Harm by Criminal Negligence
- Possession of a Scheduled Substance for the Purpose of Trafficking (fentanyl)
Both parents remain in custody.
