Brandon Police are investigating an incident that happened early Thursday morning, August 31, 2017. Just before 7:00 am Police received a call from a person who had found an 18-month-old baby girl alone in a stroller in the downtown core.
The concerned citizen told police that they had stayed with the child for 15 minutes before calling and was sure that the adults responsible for the child were not around.
As police arrived and took over they found the identification of two adults in the stroller and believed one of the IDs belonged to the mother.
Child and Family Services (CFS) were called in and the baby was placed in their care. CFS has also launched their own investigation into the abandonment case.
As the day progressed the child’s mother made a report to police several hours later that her child was missing. The mother claimed that she had left the child with a responsible adult and had no idea how the child could have wound up on a city street alone.
Police say that no charges have been laid but that they are not ruling them out as the investigation continues. For the moment, at least, the child is in the protection of CFS pending the outcome of their investigation.
