CHIEF MEDICAL EXAMINER | INQUEST CALLED INTO DEATH OF ERROL GREENE

Manitoba’s  Acting Chief Medical Examiner has called an inquest into  the death of Bradley Errol Greene.

On April 30, 2016 Greene was arrested by the Winnipeg Police Service on a warrant for breach of recognizance and breach of conditions of recognizance by consuming alcohol.

On May 1, 2016 while in the Winnipeg Remand Centre he suffered a seizure while on the telephone. He was assessed by medical staff and taken to his cell to recover. Just under an hour later he had a second seizure and was again assessed. Paramedics were called in and during their assessment of his condition he became unresponsive. CPR was performed and he was taken to Health Sciences Centre where he was placed in intensive care.  Six hours later at approximately 8:30pm Greene died.

An autopsy was performed and the initial case of death was acute hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (brain injury caused by lack of oxygen) due to cardiorespiratory arrest due to complications of seizure activity due to chronic epilepsy.

Under the Fatalities Inquiries Act and inquest is mandatory when a person died as a result of a violent act, undue means or negligence or in an unexpected or unexplained manner or suddenly of unknown cause; or that a person died as a result of an act or omission of a peace officer in the course of duty.

The inquest will determine the circumstances that led to Greene’s death and try to determine what can be do to prevent similar deaths in the future.

A date foe the inquest is yet to be determined.
