Chief Medical Examiner calls inquest into the death of Eishia Hudson

Manitoba Chief Medical Examiner, Dr Jon K. Younes, has called an inquest into the death of 16-year-old Eishia Hudson.

Hudson was shot by police during a pursuit April 8, 2020.

According to investigators Hudson was driving a stolen vehicle that was used as a getaway vehicle during a robbery at a Sage creek Liquor Mart. As police followed the suspect vehicle the driver rammed in to a police cruiser prompting a pursuit.

The fleeing vehicle was stopped at Lagimodiere Boulevard and Fermor Avenue and as police were attempting to arrest the five occupants in the vehicle the driver placed the vehicle in gear and began reversing. An officer fired their sidearm striking the driver. Hudson was taken to Health Sciences Centre where she was pronounced dead.

The medical examiner’s office determine the cause of death to be the gunshot to the torso.

The inquest called is mandated under the Fatality Inquiries Act and has been set to determine the circumstances relating to Hudson’s death and what can be done to prevent similar deaths from occurring in the future.

The date of the inquest has yet to be determined.
