RCMP and Winnipeg Police arrest 168 for impaired driving during the holiday season
In a province-wide campaign to reduce the number of impaired drivers on the road the RCMP and other police forces spread out across Manitoba in the annual holiday check stop program and the results are staggering.
During the month-long RCMP Holiday Checkstop Program 11,781 vehicles were checked during 250 Checkstops.
RCMP charged 122 people with impaired driving offences (Impaired, Over .08, Refusal to test, Impaired by drugs). An additional 60 people had their licences temporarily suspended because of alcohol or drug related offences. 48 people were charged with Liquor and Gaming Control Act offences and 2633 drivers faced Highway Traffic Act offences, mostly for speeding.
City of Winnipeg drivers did fair better but not by much.
Winnipeg Police Service stopped 4472 vehicles and administered 168 roadside breath tests during their check stop program. 46 drivers were charges with impaired, over .08 or refusal to take a breath test. 27 people received a 72 hour suspension of their driving privileges. 136 people were ticketed for Highway Traffic Act offences and 10 people were arrested for unrelated criminal issues.
