Man allegedly punches dog, charged with animal cruelty

Winnipeg Police have laid charges against a 29-year-old male who was seen allegedly punching a dog several times and dragging it from a choke collar.

It happened on Saturday, July 6, 2019 just before midnight near North Meadow Drive and Plessis Road.

Police say the suspect had been looking for the dog who had wandered away from an area residence. When he found the animal the allegedly dragged it using a choke collar and then assaulted the pet by punching it several times.

Investigators say the witnesses to the incident called them.

The suspect then began to verbally intimidate the witnesses. At some point the man left but returned with a German Shepard and released it from it’s leash in what police say was an effort to further intimidate the witnesses.

When police arrived the suspect fled on foot/. Police pursued him and placed him under arrest a short distance away.

Police say the dog the male attacked was a Rottweiler owned by an extended family member. Several bystanders had stayed with the injured dog who was taken to an emergency vet for medical treatment. The dog has since recovered from its injuries but remains in care.

The German Shepard, owned by the suspect, was seized and is in the care of the Animals Services Agency.

Amninder Sigh Grewal is facing charges for his alleged involvement of Causing Unnecessary Suffering to an Animal and Attempt to Obstruct Justice.

Grewal was detained in custody.
