Charges laid against Manitoba First Nations Police officer

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) announced on Tuesday, November 3, 2020 that a Manitoba First Nations Police officer has been charged in relation a September 2018 incident.

According to the IIU on off-duty officer was involved in a pursuit earlier in the day while on-duty. Several hours later he located the suspect vehicle abandoned near a Sandy Bay First Nation home.

As the officer searched for the suspect he allegedly went inside a nearby residence without permission.

The IIU conducted an investigation after being notified about the incident in June of 2020. The investigation concluded that there was reasonable grounds to believe a criminal offence occurred and a charge for being unlawfully in a dwelling house was authorized.

Manitoba First Nations Police Service officer Don Mills was issued a summons on October 28, 2020 and will appear in court on December 22, 2020 to answer to the charges.
