Rules around who can soon get a third jab against COVID in Manitoba were released by the province today. The list includes people moderately or severely immunocompromised by certain medical conditions and treatments, those who want it for travel purposes and people who received vaccines not approved by Health Canada. “This initial plan for the third dose recognizes those who are at increased risk of severe illness,” said Dr. Joss Reimer, medical lead of the Vaccine Implementation Task Force. “It also responds to the individual challenges faced by people travelling outside of Canada.” Those who were vaccinated elsewhere will be considered fully immunized and can have their immunization record updated by taking the third dose. The complete list of circumstances where a third immunization is now recommended is available online at www.manitoba.ca/vaccine. Work also continues on defining what will qualify as a valid medical reason to formally exempt a person from having to be vaccinated, and to formalize that process so people with solid medical reasons to avoid it can access the same benefits as those with an immunization card. The three situations the task force is looking at are where people have had a severe allergic rations to a previous dose of the COVID-19 vaccine; those who are severely allergic to an ingredient in the vaccine; and those whose immune systems are too compromised to risk it. According to Dr. Reimer, the process to submit medical exemptions will be finalized as soon as possible, and there are plans to provide updated clinical guidance for health-care professionals in the coming weeks.
