Residents of the Town of Carman, about 85 kilometres west of Winnipeg, are under a boil water advisory after routine monitoring of the towns treated water supply. Poorly treated water mixed into the water distribution system causing the water to look hazy.
The Medical Officer of Health, Manitoba Health and the Office of Drinking Water, Manitoba Sustainable Development issued the order on Tuesday, December 4, 2018.
Until further notice water used to drink, prepare food (including making baby formula, washing fruit and vegetables or making ice) or brushing teeth should be brought to a rolling boil for at least one minute, then allowed to cool before being used.
Tap water can be used to wash laundry or shower as long as the water is not swallowed.
The province advises that if water cannot be boiled for some reason an alternative supply like bottled water should be used for consumption.
The boil order will remain in effect until such time as the water supply does not pose a health risk.
