A 25-year-old male was taken into custody on Sunday, August 12, 2018, after he tried to carjack a vehicle in the 600 block of Balmoral Street.
Police say that Awasis John Beardy approached a parked vehicle with two people inside, pulled open the door armed with a knife and tried to pull the driver out. As the driver struggled to pull the door closed Beardy allegedly made threats towards the victim.
The female victim was able to reach over and put the vehicle in reverse as Beardy was punched by the male victim. At this point, the carjacker took off.
A short time afterwards Beardy jumped into an unlocked vehicle that had been left running in the 500 block of Balmoral. He reversed the vehicle into a garage and was pulled from the vehicle by people who had witnessed the incident. He was held for police.
Beardy was detained in custody and charged with Robbery, Possession of a Weapon, Theft of a Motor Vehicle as well as two charges from outstanding warrants for Failing to Appear and Failing to Comply with a Probation Order.
