Carjacking suspect busted after he couldn’t open car door

Winnipeg Police have arrested a 22-year-old male after he carjacked a man at the intersection of Albert Street and McDermot Avenue.

It happened last night, February 8, 2018, around 8:30 pm. The victim had used a remote car starter to start his vehicle while the doors were locked. As the victim and a friend approached the vehicle the suspect confronted them and demanded the keys to the vehicle. The suspect indicated that he had a weapon. The victim handed over the keys but the suspect was unable to open the vehicle and left the area.

As police were talking to the victim the suspect returned to the intersection.

Officers tried to place the suspect under arrest but he resisted.  Police were then forced to taser the suspect and it took four officers to subdue him and take him into custody.

Police say the suspect admitted to them afterwards that he had ingested methamphetamine.

Dakota Francis Richard has been charged for his alleged involvement with Robbery (Carjacking), Resist Peace Officer, Identity Fraud.

Richard was detained in custody.
