Carjacker goes on two hour mini crime spree

Winnipeg Police have arrested a 22-year-old male suspect after he allegedly carjacked a vehicle then went on to attempt a second carjacking shortly afterwards.

Police say around 9:00 am on February 21, 2019, the suspect jumped into a cargo van near Edmonton Street and Broadway being driven by a 20-year-old male and indicated he had a knife, The driver got out of the vehicle and the suspect drove away.

About 30 minutes later the suspect used the cargo van to cut off a driver near Fermor Avenue and Dunkirk Drive causing him to stop. The suspect then got out of the van and tried to enter the man’s vehicle but it was locked. The suspect then threatened the driver and ordered him out of the vehicle. The driver refused and the suspect got back in the van and drove off.

The van was abandoned on Morier Avenue and the suspect then tried to steal a vehicle that had been left running and unoccupied but he got stuck in the snow.

Police say that the suspect then stole clothing from another vehicle. The owner of that vehicle confronted the suspect who said he had a gun then returned the clothing and took off on foot.

The suspect then went into a garage that had been left unlocked and stole more clothing.

Just before 11:00 am the K-9 unit tracked the suspect to the garage and he was taken into custody.

Riley Craig Vermette from Winnipeg was charged for his alleged involvement with three counts of Robbery, Theft of a motor vehicle, Break-Enter and Theft and Drive without a Licence or valid Licence.

He was detained in custody.
