A 32-year-old male is facing eight charges after he was allegedly responsible for a Pembina Highway carjacking early Monday, morning, January 24, 2022.
Police say that the accused jumped into to a vehicle that had been left running. When the driver returned the suspect pulled a knife and threatened the driver then fled in the vehicle.
Police spotted the vehicle near Osborne Street and Jubilee Avenue and initiated a traffic stop but the driver fled the area while disregarding traffic signals and speeding. Due to the conditions of the road officers did not chase the suspect.
A short time later the suspect sped through a red light at Portage Avenue and collided with an eastbound truck causing it to spin into and knocking over a light standard. The suspect crashed into a snowbank and then ran from the vehicle.
Police were able to quickly find the fleeing suspect with the help of a bystander.The suspect was taken into custody.
The accused has been charged for his alleged involvement with Robbery, Possess Weapon, Possess Break In Instruments, Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance, Flight While Pursued by Peace Officer, Fail to Stop at Scene of Accident, Drive Without an Invalid License and Drive Suspended.
Police say that no injuries were reported related to the incident.
