Winnipeg Police had their hands full over the weekend with a number of stolen vehicle incidents.
Carjacking
On Sunday, October 7, 2018, just after 11:30 pm a 33-year-old female was pulled from her SUV on Robinson Street near Flora Avenue by one of two suspects who has ordered her out of her vehicle. The suspects took off with the vehicle that still had the victim’s iPhone inside.
Police met with the woman and they were able to use the “find my iPhone” service to track the stolen SUV to Swindford Way and Carsdale Drive.
AIR-1 began a search and found the vehicle on Swindford Way. Patrol unit converged on the area but the suspects tried to flee hitting one cruiser crossing the median and ramming a second patrol unit and coming to a stop.
An adult male and a male youth were arrested a the scene. Both suspects were impaired by drugs and alcohol say police.
Ashton Cole Peters, 23 from Winnipeg, has been charged for his alleged involvement with:
- Robbery
- Flight while Pursued by Peace Officer
- Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle
- Driving While Ability Impaired
- Driving While Disqualified
- Assault with a Weapon
- Fail to Comply Condition Recognizance by Judge/Justice (x2)
- Mischief Under $5,000/Obstruct in Enjoyment
A 16-year-old male from Winnipeg has been charged for his alleged involvement with:
- Robbery
- Flight while Pursued by Peace Officer
- Driving While Ability Impaired
- Fail to Comply Condition Undertaking by Judge/Justice (x2)
Both suspects were detained in custody.
Stolen Vehicles
Seven more people are facing charges in three other unrelated incidents of stolen vehicles over the weekend.
Early Sunday morning, October 7, 2018, AIR-1 spotted a stolen SUV as it was travelling across the Arlington Street Bridge. They tracked the vehicle to Elgin Avenue and Kate Street where the vehicle stopped and the occupant jumped out and took off on foot.
Both occupants, a 17-year-old male and 16-year-old male were captured close by and are facing charges.
The vehicle had been reported stolen the day before by an employee of a group home where one of the suspects resided.
Police also put four people under arrest after a general patrol unit noticed a stolen SUV in the area of Charles Street and Redwood Avenue just before midnight on Sunday. As soon as they noticed the police the vehicle took off in an effort to evade them.
AIR-1 once again was called in after the suspects started speeding through a residential area. The vehicle came to a stop in the back lane of College Avenue and the four occupants bolted from the scene. Three suspects were taken into custody immediately and the fourth was chased down on foot by officers and captured a few blocks away.
Police say the vehicle had been stolen from a dealership on Century Street on Friday, October 5, 2018.
The four suspects, two males aged 23 and two females aged 22 and 25 are all facing charges.
Minutes into Monday, October 8, 2018, police tried to stop a stolen van at Logan Avenue and McPhillips Street but the driver sped away from officers. The driver lost control a few blocks east at Logan and Sherbrook Street and slammed into a Manitoba distribution line and a traffic signal control panel causing about $120,000 in damage.
The driver took off on foot but the K-9 unit was able to track the male suspect to the front door of a residence in the 600 block of Alexander Avenue. The suspect resisted arrest but was eventually taken into custody.
A search of the suspect located five .22 calibre cartridges. Officers found a number of shotgun shells inside the van as well.
The vehicle had been reported stolen from the 600 block of Jarvis Avenue on September 26, 2018.
A 37-year-old male from Winnipeg has been arrested for his alleged involvement and charged with:
- Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle
- Flight while Pursued by Peace Officer
- Resist Peace Officer
- Possession of a Prohibited Device or Ammunition Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
- Carrying Concealed Weapon Prohibited Device or Ammunition
- Possession of Firearm, Restricted/Prohibited Weapon or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order (x2)
- Possession of a Prohibited Device or Ammunition Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5,000 (x2)
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000
- Fail to Comply Condition Recognizance by Judge/Justice (x3)
He was detained in custody.
