Carjackers impersonating police officers arrested

Selkirk RCMP have arrested three people in connection to a carjacking that happened on Highway 59 in the RM of St. Clements early Saturday morning, September 25, 2021.

Police say that a vehicle with red and blue lights stopped an SUV with two females inside. A male approached the SUV and asked for identification and registration. When the suspect was questioned by the victims he pulled out a gun and forced the females out of the vehicle and took their cell phones. The suspect then stole the victim’s vehicle and headed southbound on Highway 59.

RCMP quickly found the vehicle near Highway 44 on Highway 59. The driver of the stolen vehicle then tried to ram a police patrol unit while attempting to flee. A spike belt was used to disable the fleeing vehicle and the suspect was taken into custody.

When the suspect was at the detachment in Selkirk he became combative and assaulted a guard and a police officer.

40-year-old Ryan Demchuk from Winnipeg has been charged for his alleged involvement with Robbery with Firearm, Assault Police Officer, Dangerous Operation of Motor Vehicle, Possess Stolen Property Over $5000, Assault with Weapon, Flight from Police Officer, Personating a Police Officer, Disguise with Intent to Commit, and three counts of Possession of Firearm while Prohibited.

RCMP continued to look for the fake police vehicle used in the carjacking and located it several hours later heading northbound on Main Street in Selkirk. The male driver and female passenger were taken into custody.

A search of the vehicle found drugs, illegal cigarettes, several weapons, an airlift handgun and a set of red and blue lights.

Sean Demchuk 38 and 28-year-old Chelsea Flewelling from Winnipeg were charged for their alleged involvement with Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking Cocaine, Possession of Weapon for Dangerous Purpose, and Unauthorized Possession of a Prohibited Weapon. Sean Demchuk is also charged with two counts of Possession of Weapons Contrary to Order. RCMP say further charges are being considered.

All three suspects were remanded in custody.
