According to Smyth Carfentanil is 100 times more potent than Fentanyl and 10,000 time stronger than Morphine. It is a drug that was designed for large game animals like moose or elephants. The smallest of doses, only a few grains, can be fatal in people.

In the past year the city has seen close to 200 overdose deaths and of those 94 can be attributed to opioid use.

Most of the drug seems to be getting into the city from countries in Asia like China. According to police it is very easy for it to come into Winnipeg by mail and extremely difficult for police to detect.
