Winnipeg Fire paramedic Service say that careless disposal of a cigarette butt is to blame for two fires Monday morning, June 15, 2020.
Disraeli Street Fire
Firefighters responded to reports od a fire in a one-and-a-half storey home on Disraeli Street around 3:30 am.
When crews arrived on scene the front of the home was fully engulfed in flames.
Everyone inside were able to escape through a window before emergency crews arrived
The blaze was quickly brought under control but a fire watch was put on the house. Crews returned to the home a few hours later after a passerby noticed smoke coming from the building. The hotspot was quickly put out.
Fire officials say the blaze was determined to be accidental.
Harbison Avenue East Fire
At 8:13 a fire on the deck of a single-family bungalow brought emergency responders to the 600 block of Harbison Avenue East.
A small fire was was quickly put out.
The occupants of the home had self-evacuated and no injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire was determined to be accidental due to careless disposal of a cigarette butt.
The Winnipeg Fire Service said that it is important to remember that cigarettes and other smoking materials should be extinguished in an ashtray or deep metal container partially filled with water or sand. Do not put cigarettes butts in the trash without dousing it with water first.
Plant pots should never be used as an ashtray. Soil used in planters usually contains other materials that can be combustible.
