Careless driving ticket issued against RCMP officer

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has determined that charges should be laid against a Portage la Prairie RCMP officer.

The IIU says the investigation began in July 2019 after a 33-year-old male was injured during his arrest.

Investigators say that RCMP was called to a residence in the community for a disturbance. The male suspect fled on his bicycle but was located shortly afterwards.

As the male continued to flee the officer pulled his cruiser in front of the suspect and hit him at low speed.

The suspect was taken to hospital but did not suffer any serious injuries.

The officer was issued a Provincial Offence ticket under the Highway Traffic Act for driving carelessly.

The name of the officer was not released.
