Careless disposal of cigarette to blame for Burland Avenue fire

As emergency crews arrived heavy smoke was seen coming from a storage shed on a third floor balcony. Flames from the fire were extending into the attic.

An offensive attack was launched and the fire was declared under control at 10:47 pm

Although most of the residents in the building had self-evacuated firefighters did help several people out of the building.

The fire investigator determined that the cause of the fire was due to “improper disposal of a cigarette butt.”

WFPS took the opportunity to remind Winnipegers that  Smoking material should always be extinguished in a proper ashtray or deep metal container. Cigarette butts should also never be thrown from balconies, car windows, or disposed of near any vegetation such as grass, leaves or brush.
