Caregivers to receive $5 per hour top-up to wages

The Manitoba government announced a new $35 million wage support program for caregivers on Friday, November 27, 2020.

More than 20,000 Manitobans working full and part time as caregivers during the pandemic are eligible for an hourly $5 top-up to their wages based on the hours they worked between November 1, 2020 and January 10, 2021.

“Every day, thousands of Manitoba workers make our province a better place by showing compassion, care and dedication as they support some of our most vulnerable citizens, such as seniors, people with disabilities, children in care and people at homeless shelters,” said Families Minister Heather Stefanson. “Their commitment has not wavered, despite the challenges and fears caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Through the Caregiver Wage Support Program, our government is recognizing their ongoing commitment and the value of their critical work.”

The benefit will be paid directly to workers who are eligible and earned less than $25 per hour. This includes health-care aides, housekeeping staff, direct service workers and recreation workers who provide direct care to vulnerable Manitobans at personal care homes or in disability services, child welfare services, homeless and family violence prevention shelters, or long-term care facilities.

More information on how eligible workers can register for the program is available in the link below.

The province ($18 million) and federal government ($17 million) are cost-sharing the cost of the program.
