Cannabis is legal today, pot sales skyrocket

It is official, cannabis is now legal across Canada and retail pot stores are doing a booming business.

Minutes after it became legal, online cannabis websites began selling the once illicit weed but at least one retailer was sold out within hours.

People camped overnight in front of the Delta 9 Cannabis store in St. Vital to be the first to purchase legal marijuana from that store when it opened at 10:00 am Wednesday morning. Lineups at the five currently licensed retail outlets were long as people waited for their first taste of legal weed. Many of the stores had limited supplies on hand.

It didn’t take long for someone to get introduced to the new fines set up in Manitoba for smoking pot in a car. Winnipeg Police took to social media after they issued their first cannabis-related ticket since legalization.

The federal government announced today that those previously convicted of cannabis-related offences will no longer be subject to a five year waiting period or the $ 631 in associated fees when seeking a pardon.   Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said that under the new plan, people could apply immediately as long as they have completed their sentence.

In Manitoba, you have to be 19 years of age to purchase or consume cannabis. You cannot smoke or vape in public (or in a vehicle) or have more than 30 grams of cannabis products on your person in public. You are not allowed to grow marijuana at home and it is an offence to purchase cannabis from anyone other than a licensed retail or online seller.
