Canada Day carjacker bites officer during arrest

A-28-year-old male is facing a number of charges after carjacked a vehicle, was involved in a collision and assaulted a police officer on Canada Day.

Police say the incident began around 6:45 pm when the suspect jumped onto the hood of a vehicle that was stopped at McGregor Street and Selkirk Avenue. The suspect was screaming then dove head first through the open passenger window. He then punched the driver in the face. The driver got out of the vehicle and the suspect sped away.

Investigators say the suspect ended up in a collision at the base of the Arlington Street Bridge at Logan Avenue. The three occupant in the car that was hit were injured, two seriously, and transported to hospital.

A second parked vehicle was also hit as a result of the collision but no one was injured in that collision.

As officers were arresting the suspect he bit one of them on the upper body. The officer was treated in hospital.

The suspect was charged fr his alleged involvement with Robbery, Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance Cause Bodily Harm, Operation of a Conveyance While Impaired to Any Degree by BAC or Drugs and Assault a Peace Officer.

As mandated by the Criminal Code of Canada the suspect was released on an Undertaking.
