Police seize camera from media at crime scene after suspect experiences medical emergency

On Saturday, December 2, 2017, Winnipeg Police were called to the 800 block of Main Street just after 11:00 am for a report of a male armed with a weapon causing a disturbance.

When officers arrived on scene the male had already been disarmed by several people in the area and was being held for them. Officers learned that the male had also been kicked out of a nearby business for brandishing a weapon.

As officers took control of the suspect he experienced a medical emergency. Paramedics were called and the male in his 30s was taken to hospital in critical condition.

Investigators say that they believe the suspect had interactions with several people prior to his arrest and are asking anyone who may have had contact with the suspect to contact the Major Crimes Unit at 204-986-6219.

During the incident veteran photographer, Chris Procaylo from the Winnipeg Sun arrived to take pictures. Officers at the scene took exception to the photographer being there and told him they were seizing his camera as part of their investigation.

Although Police cited the ‘tense situation’ as a reason for the seizure, spokesperson Rob Carver from the Winnipeg Police Service told media that the officers involved in taking the camera understand that this was a wrong course of action and that the camera was returned. According to Carver policies and procedures were not followed.
