Calgary man charged with human smuggling into Manitoba

RCMP have charge a Calgary man with human smuggling after stopping him in a vehicle with seven male occupants near Dominion City in southern Manitoba.

On January 27, 2024, the United States Border Patrol contacted the RCMP around 3:45 am about a group of people walking northbound along a rail line towards the Canadian border near Emerson. The men were wearing proper winter clothing and it was believed they were likely to cross into Canada within the hour.

RCMP from the Integrated Border Enforcement Team conducted a stop on a rental vehicle near the intersection Provincial Road 201 and PR 200. The vehicle contained the 49-year-old driver, Saleh Youssouf, and seven other men aged 49,44,37,34,33,28,27. The seven men were confirmed to be foreign nationals fro the Republic of Chad.

The driver was taken into custody and the seven men were handed over to Immigration officers at the Emerson Port of Entry.

The investigation is continuing.
