Cab driver attempted to extort passenger after a phone was left in taxi

A 51-year-old Winnipeg cab driver was arrested on Wednesday, October 13, 2021, for allegedly trying to extort money from a 23-year-old female after she had left her phone in the cab.

The incident happened around 10:00 am in the St. John’s neighbourhood. When the female had realized she had left her phone in the car the night before the driver requested money for its return. When the driver returned on Wednesday to return the phone the female tried to grab it but the driver drove off dragging the woman. She suffered minor injuries.

Police investigated and arrested the driver later the same day. He has been charged for his alleged involvement with Extortion, Dangerous Operation of a Conveyance/vehicle, Drive Carelessly and Fail to Exercise Due Care for a Pedestrian on a Highway.

The cabbie was released on an Undertaking as mandated by the Criminal Code, say police.
