Bystanders Intervene in Downtown Assault, Suspect Arrested

A 34-year-old woman was assaulted in broad daylight in the 100 block of Rupert Avenue on Valentine’s Day (February 14, 2025), but quick action from bystanders prevented further harm. Winnipeg Police responded to the scene at approximately 11:50 a.m. after receiving reports of the assault.

The victim was walking in the area when she was approached by an unknown male suspect who physically assaulted her, knocking her to the ground and continuing the assault. Witnesses intervened, providing the woman refuge inside a vehicle. She did not require medical attention and was not injured.

The suspect then fled the scene, proceeding to the intersection of Logan Avenue and Princess Street. There, he kicked the driver’s side door of a 2025 Porsche Macan, causing an estimated $1,000 in damage. He also attempted to assault other pedestrians.

Again, bystanders stepped in, apprehending the suspect near Princess Street and Rupert Avenue. They held him until police arrived at approximately 12:08 p.m. The suspect was then turned over to Central District General Patrol officers without incident.

Police have charged 46-year-old Michael Andrew Lachance of Winnipeg for his alleged involvement with Assault, Mischief Under $5,000/Obstruct in Enjoyment, and Fail to Comply with Probation Order. He has been detained in custody.

The assault is considered random, as the victim and suspect were not previously known to each other.
