Busy night for firefighters in Winnipeg on Saturday

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was busy Saturday night, July4, 2020, with a number of calls within 90 minutes of each other.

Water Rescues

Just after 8:00 pm crews were called to several water rescues at within minutes of each other.

At 8:12 pm an individual in distress was rescued from a swimming pool and taken to hospital in critical condition.

Ten minutes later, around 8:22 pm, firefighters searched the red river near the Forks after receiving a report that four youth without lifejackets were on a dinghy on the river. A search of the area did not locate the youth.

At 8:29 pm crews went to the riverbank at Main Street and St. John’s Avenue after shoes were found on the bank and something was in the water. Fire officials say nothing was found.

At 8:51 a report came in that two people were holding onto a tree in the Assiniboine River near the Maryland Street Bridge. Water rescue crews searched the area, including downstream but no one was found.

Fires

Fire fighters also responded to a number of outside fires across the city including one under the Donald Street Bridge just before 9:00 pm.

Two structure fires were also responded to within 25 minutes of each other.

At 8:59 pm a fire in a single-storey home on Marsden Street sent plumes of smoke into the air.

When crews arrived they launched an offensive attack and the fire was declared under control within 30 minutes.

The occupant of the house was able to self-evacuate. No injuries were reported.

Fire officials say that the fire is believed to have been an accident due to an electrical issue.

While crews were battling the Marsden fire another call for help came in on Aberdeen Avenue.

Just after 9:20 pm crews were called to a one-and-a-half storey house in the 500 block of Aberdeen Avenue.

Smoke was seen coming from the home as crews arrived.

An offensive attack was immediately launched and the fire was declared under control by 9:47 pm.

People inside the home were able to get out before firefighters arrived on scene.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
