Braving near -40 degree windchill did not deter hundreds of Winnipegers from waiting in line for the official opening of Canada’s first Jollibee Restaurant.
Jollibee is a fast food chain that began in the Philippines and people waiting in line were excited to get a taste of home. Their fried chicken, spaghetti, rice and pineapple topped burgers are not what North American fast food outlets traditionally serve but those in line say it’s worth the wait.
Jollibee picked Winnipeg for the first Canadian restaurant because we have the highest number of Filipinos per capita in the nation. A second location is opening in the spring on McPhillips and two more will open in the Toronto area. Jollibee officials also said that they expect to open another in Edmonton in 2018.
The restaurant is located in a strip mall at Elllice Avenue and Milt Stegall Drive.
