WINNIPEG WEATHER

BUSINESS | BLACK FRIDAY IS HERE

Let the craziness begin… welcome to Black Friday the traditional start of the Christmas shopping season in the United States but in recent years it has become a thing in Canada too.

A few years ago Canadian retailers began offering deep discounts on Black Friday in an effort to stop shoppers heading south of the border. It is a plan that met with some success.

According to Statistics Canada, road trips to the United States dropped by 30% in November 2015 but that can also be related to the low Canadian dollar which is hovering at about $.75 compared to the U.S. greenbacks.

Shoppers lined up at malls and big box stores around Winnipeg this morning hoping to score the big deal with many stores promising up to 50% off regular prices.

If you are on the hunt for savings don’t fret, no longer is Black Friday a one day event. Many stores are offering discount prices the entire weekend and some for the next week as well.

Although Black Friday still takes a back seat to Boxing Day when it comes to the number of shoppers searching for savings if you do dive into the feeding frenzy you just might be able to knock off a few items from your Christmas shopping list.
