A transit bus travelling through Disraeli and Sutherland turned into the scene of an unprovoked attack on Monday morning.
The incident began when the accused, identified as 30-year-old Steven Michael Gagnon of Winnipeg, brandished a hammer and attempted to strike a male passenger in his 20s. Chaos ensued as Gagnon moved to the front of the bus, shouting and subsequently tackling another passenger in his 40s.
In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, some passengers intervened. One of them, fearing for their safety, utilized bear spray to subdue the assailant. This action caused Gagnon to flee the scene. He was later apprehended by police on the Disraeli bridge.
Fortunately, no passengers were injured in the incident. However, due to the bear spray, the bus required decontamination. The police seized the bear spray, and no further charges were filed against the passenger who deployed it.
Steven Michael Gagnon faces multiple charges including Assault with a Weapon, Assault, Uttering Threats to Cause Death or Bodily Harm, and Possession of a Weapon. He is currently detained in custody.
