A former Winnipeg television broadcaster and journalism instructor has allegedly added another position to his career path.
Steve Vogelsang, 53, was arrested by Medicine Hat Police Service (MHPS) on Saturday, October 21, 2017, after he allegedly robbed two banks in the Alberta city.
MHPS say that on Thursday, October 19, 2017, a man walked into the Royal Bank on 13 Avenue SE and demanded money. He then fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.
On Friday, October 20, 2017, the suspect again walked into a bank, this time the Bank of Montreal on Dunmore RD SE. He again demanded money and took off with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Police arrested Vogelsang on Saturday, October 21, 2017, at a hotel in Medicine Hat without incident.
Vogelsang came to Winnipeg in the late 1980s and worked as a sports reporter for CKY-TV (CTV-Winnipeg) for a number of years before he moved into the position of News Director. In 2002 Vogelsang moved over to Red River College as a journalism instructor. He left the position in 2011 and moved to British Columbia. He has since returned to Winnipeg and lists his profession as an instructor and curriculum developer for Red River College since August of 2016. The college says that he is no longer employed by them.
Vogelsang has been charged with two counts of robbery. He will appear in an Alberta provincial court on Tuesday, October 24, 2017.
He remains in custody.
