18-year-old face charges after numerous break-ins and assault on cabbie

Winnipeg Police have arrested and charged an 18-year-old male after he assaulted and robbed a local cabbie then went on a mini crime spree breaking into garages and vehicles.

It all began just after 8:30 pm on New Year’s day, January 1, 2018, near Burrows Avenue and Buller Street. Police say a Taxi driver and his passenger got into an argument over the fare. The suspect pulled out a knife and punched the cabbie several times in the face and then stole his personal property. The driver suffered minor injuries.

The suspect then broke into a couple of garages in the 1200 block of Manitoba Avenue. He damaged a vehicle and stole various tools from the first garage but he didn’t take anything from the second.  The suspect then rummaged through two vehicles parked on the street where he damaged the window in one of the vehicles and stole medication.

Just after midnight officers patrolling the area located the suspect around Shaughnessy Street and Prichard Avenue and placed him under arrest.

James Albert Sumner has been charged for his alleged involvement with:

  • Break, Enter & Theft
  • Robbery
  • Possess Weapon
  • Mischief Under $5000 X2
  • Break & Enter with Intent
  • Theft Under $5000

 

He was detained in custody.
