Brandon Police Officer Charged with Assault Following IIU Investigation

A Brandon Police Service (BPS) officer has been charged with assault causing bodily harm following an investigation by the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) into the arrest of a woman in August 2023.

The investigation stems from an incident on August 25, 2023, when BPS officers responded to a disturbance call near First Street and Cornwallis Crescent at approximately 11:56 p.m. Officers arrested an adult female and returned her to her residence.

Six days later, on August 31, 2023, the woman filed a complaint with BPS regarding injuries she sustained during the arrest. On September 15, 2023, BPS learned that the woman had suffered a broken collarbone.

The IIU, which oversees serious incidents involving police officers in Manitoba, launched an investigation into the matter on September 26, 2023, and publicly announced the investigation at that time.

Following their investigation, the IIU has issued a summons to BPS Constable Brett Long. He has been charged for his alleged involvement with one count of assault causing bodily harm, contrary to Section 267(b) of the Criminal Code.

Constable Long is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.
