A 37-year-old Brandon woman is in hot water after Manitoba Finance’s Taxation Special Investigations Unit raided a home in the wheat city on Wednesday May 15, 2019.
Investigators executed a search warrant and seized 68,150 contraband cigarettes along with $3,760 in cash.
The tobacco products were not marked for sale in Manitoba and the suspect is facing charges for violating Manitoba’s tobacco tax acts.
According to investigators the province stood to lose more than $20,000 in tax revenue if the cigarettes had been sold.
The suspect is facing a fine of $1,000 to $10,000 and/or six months in jail if she is convicted. She will also be subject to a triple tax penalty of $60,312.75 if the courts find against her.
