In the early morning hours of July 20, 2017, a 14-year-old boy was approached by three adult males in the area of Lindsay Street and Wellington Crescent.
The men wanted the youths bike. They pushed the teen to the ground, punched him then fled with his bicycle.
As luck would have it police were in the area at that time conducting a proactive project that focused on property crime when they came upon the boy just after the robbery.
Shortly afterwards a general patrol unit saw the suspects around Portage Avenue and Winston Road. Upon seeing the police the three males took off on foot. Officers brought in the K-9 unit and it wasn’t long before the first suspect was found in the 100 block of Winston Road. A second suspect was found in the 100 block of Cavell Drive.
Charles Kaniki, 18, from Winnipeg, has been arrested and charged for his alleged involvement with Robbery and Fail to Comply Condition Recognizance. He was detained in custody.
Another unnamed 18-year-old male from Winnipeg was also arrested and charged for his alleged involvement with Robbery and Possession of a Weapon. Police released him on a Promise to Appear.
Officers continue to investigate this case and ask that anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
