Bomb explodes injuring four people

Police say those injured not the intended victims

What was originally reported by police as a single vehicle collision and fire turns out to be a bomb explosion.

On July 15, 2017,  just after 11:15 pm emergency crews responded to the report of a truck colliding with a fire hydrant and the vehicle was on fire.

It happened on Gallager Street at Midmar Avenue.

When crews arrived they found four people suffering from severe burns. Two males in their 20s, a 20-year-old female and a 17-year-old male were taken to the hospital. One of the men and the female were taken to hospital in critical condition.

According to investigators, the cause of the fire was an explosion that had occurred within the cab of the truck from an Improvised Explosive Device (I.E.D.).  Police say that indications are that the bomb was detonated by accident and the victims were not the intended target.

The IED was inside a bag that someone from the vehicle had just picked up in a parking lot at a nearby 7-11. Police say that the person who had brought the bag to the 7-11 was also not the intended target.

Although the investigation is ongoing police are asking anyone with information about the incident to contact them at 204-986-6219 or by calling Crime Stoppers at 204-786-Tips (8477).
