Bear Spray Assault in Central Park Neighborhood

On December 21, 2024, at approximately 5:45 p.m., Central District General Patrol officers responded to a report of an assault with a weapon in the Central Park neighborhood. Upon arrival, officers located the suspect’s vehicle parked a short distance away. The suspect, a 33-year-old male from Winnipeg, was taken into custody without incident while seated in the driver’s seat. Officers seized a canister of bear spray from the vehicle.

The investigation revealed that the suspect had collided with another vehicle on Ellice Avenue, resulting in a minor collision. A verbal argument ensued, leading the suspect to follow the victim into a surface parking lot near Kennedy Street and Qu’Appelle Avenue. While the 31-year-old male victim and a 33-year-old female passenger exited their vehicle to assess the damage, the suspect assaulted the male victim by spitting in his direction. The suspect then retrieved a canister of bear spray from his vehicle and discharged it on both the male and female victims. Due to an open window in the victim’s vehicle, a male in his teens and two children under five years old were also affected by the bear spray. Fortunately, medical attention was not required.

The suspect and the victims were not previously known to each other. The 33-year-old male suspect is facing multiple charges, including five counts of assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon. He was released on an undertaking as mandated by the Criminal Code.
