16-year-old male facing charges in Bannerman Avenue Standoff

An incident that ended in an armed and barricaded standoff with police on Wednesday, November 7, 2018, began around 6:00 am with reports of shots being fired into a home in the 300 block of Aikins Street near Mountain Avenue. According to Winnipeg Police Chief Danny Smyth, the K-9 unit tracked back to an address in the 300 block of Bannerman.  An investigation was conducted and five people were taken into custody.

Police maintained a perimeter while the investigation continued. Police say that just before 1:00 pm a male appeared at the Bannerman residence and he began firing towards officers from various locations within the residence. Officers fired back.

The situation was immediately treated as an armed and barricaded situation and the Tactical Support Team was redeployed to the home.

A number of schools in the area were placed on hold and secure meaning that classes continued but the doors were locked and no one was permitted in or out of the building. Residents in the area were asked to leave their homes out of safety concerns.

The situation came to an end just after 6:00 pm after gas was fired into the home.

Police have arrested a 16-year-old male and laid a number of serious criminal charges against him for his alleged involvement including:

  • Seven counts of Attempt Murder
  • Careless use of Firearm x 3
  • Unsafe storage of Firearm x 2
  • Possess Weapon for Dangerous Purpose x 4
  • Carry concealed weapon x 2
  • Possession of Firearm knowing its possession is Unauthorized x 2
  • Unauthorized Possess Loaded Prohibited or Restricted Firearm with Ammo x 2
  • Possession of Firearm, Restricted/Prohibited Weapon Contrary to Court Order x 2
  • Discharge Firearm with Intent x 3
  • Reckless Discharge of a Firearm
  • Obstruct Peace Officer
  • Disguise with intent
  • Warrant of Arrest – Suspension of Conditional Supervision Order

 

No one was hurt during the standoff.

Police say that the investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit.
