Baby red pandas finally get names thanks to Winnipeg’s help

The votes are in! Winnipeggers were asked earlier this past summer to vote for their favorite name for two new baby pandas.

The red pandas were born June 13, 2017 at the zoo.

The male has been named Suva, meaning ‘good luck’ in Nepali, and his sister has been named Tanvi, meaning ‘delicate girl’.

Saturday is also International Red Panda day and the zoo will be handing out free red panda zipper pulls to visitors to the zoo over the weekend.

Red Pandas are considered an endangered species with their population in their native habitat less than 50% of what it was several generations ago. The reason is illegal hunting and deforestation which experts say will continue to make the situation worse. Breeding programs, like at Assiniboine Park Zoo will help stabilize that decline and help repopulate the species.
