B.C. man facing charges after plane diverted to Winnipeg

RCMP have arrested and charged a British Columbia man after a flight from Vancouver to Toronto was forced to divert to Winnipeg on Sunday, June 14, 2020.

Police say that during the flight the 60-year-old male lit a cigarette and refused to follow the directions of the flight crew including not putting on his face mask when directed to do so.

Balvir Singh from Surrey has been charged for his alleged involvement with Mischief Over $5,000, Smoke Onboard Aircraft, Fail to Comply with Instructions of Flight Crew and Fail to Comply Flight Crew by refusing to wear a face mask.

If convicted Singh could face fines of up to $13,000 plus other court imposed penalties.

Singh was remanded in custody.

Police continue to investigate.
